Visit from HORB - 25th Anniversary
Our German friends landed at London HEATHROW and on the way home to Haslemere we entertained them to an English Tea at Watts Gallery before heading on down to Haslemere.
On the Friday the group visited Winchester. On the Saturday to mark the 25th Anniversary of our being twinned with Horb (1991) we planted a tree in Weyhill. Christopher Ashton-Jones (Sheen Botanical Labels) kindly provided the ‘plaque’ that was positioned at the foot of the tree. In the evening all enjoyed the Gala Dinner. Visit to BERNAY
The 2016 visit to Bernay coincided with the end of the schools' half-term holiday in the UK. The timing of visits is crucial so as to allow any children to come who want to.
The visit started (Friday 3rd) with an overnight ferry crossing from Portsmouth to Caen/Ouistreham by Brittany Ferries. Our coach then took us to Bernay where we were met by our hosts and taken home for breakfast and a short rest. In the afternoon we gathered for a return Pétanque match at which the French team redeemed themselves (after their defeat in 2015) by winning comprehensively with not a little panache! In the evening we met for the Gala dinner at which the Pétanque trophy was presented by the 'Deputy Mayor' following a superb many-course meal.
The next day (Saturday 4th) we met early for a trip to two literary museums, the first dedicated to Pierre Corneille (1606-1684) near Rouen (website). After lunch by the bank of the Seine we visited the Victor Hugo (1802–1885) museum (website) where we learned something of his life and the sad demise of his daughter Leopoldine.
On Sunday morning (5th) we met for 'Brunch' and said our goodbyes before heading for the return ferry. This was a very successful visit (though somewhat short) with a number of younger people involved. A fuller account of this trip will be issued shortly and posted on this website under NEWSLETTERS.

Drinks and Nibbles
We ushered in the year 2016 with our customary get-together at the Town Hall. As always this was a chance to come up to date with each other's news over a glass of something and a few nibbles.
